When you’ve lived in Stratford after having lived in any city of size, one of the things you truly appreciate is that no matter where you have to go in town, it can’t take more than 10 minutes by car, 20 minutes by bike or an hour by foot. Imagine seeing all the majesty of autumn, the crimson, burnt orange and crayon-colour yellows of the trees against wicked blue skies, leaves crunching under your feet, all within an hour’s walk or bike or cycle. In town there’s the Avon River and our incredibly photogenic parks system, the Stratford Cemetery, with its ornate wrought iron gates and contemplative air, and we have flowers downtown if you’d like to expand fall colours to the colours of the catwalk (read: lots of excellent fall and winter fashion in the shops). On September 29 you can get more architecture and garden than you bargained for at Doors Open Stratford & Perth County, with self-guided in-town visits to heritage sites such as the Festival Warehouse, Gallery Stratford, Knox Presbyterian Church, Factory 163 and others. It’s voyeurism at its best. Out of town there’s the Avon Trail for hiking, Wildwood Conservation Area with its huge lake, and you can even go horseback riding to double your outdoor fun.
