Have wheels and an engine? Then you can really explore the area, known for the large stands of deciduous trees (the pretty colours) with very few conifers (year-round green) to darken up the panorama.

Doors Open Stratford and Perth County, September 29, will start you off with a list of small-town churches, mills and stately buildings, which throw open their doors that day, and act as ambassadors for the towns. Hoffmeyer's in Sebringville, the Fryfogel Inn, just outside Shakespeare, St. Marys Town Hall, St. Marys Library, St. Marys Museum, Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, and the Fullarton Blacksmith Shop are on the list for a good look and poke around.

And while you’re out driving, getting your fill of heritage architecture and history, do not hesitate to stop at farm-gate stands or to take a little hike. Be sure to wear pants with pockets, and bring a book, because few can resist the urge to pick up acorns and walnuts, and press a brilliant leaf or two, as little reminders of nature’s works.
